This is almost hysterical to even discuss cause my wife Lauren and I were having this very discussion hours earlier about how parents this day in age have softened in their ways of disciplining their children. A far cry from what I was raised into.
I was spanked as a kid. Constantly. And I believe it made me a better person for it. The fear of the belt always kept my on the straight and narrow growing up. It's a belief I continue to hold in the fact that if your child acts up, you have every right to spare the rod. There's a huge difference between disciplining your child and outright abuse. And I'm a huge advocate of spanking your kid when he/she does wrong. If what Adrian Peterson did is true to the word according to the reports that are coming in, that's pretty much child abuse in my eyes and he should be ashamed of himself. Period. I have no shame in saying when my son Eli is older and he gets out of line, he will be spanked, the same way I was growing up. No question about it. But as I have constantly reiterated there's a fine line. I'm speaking as a father who was raised in a family where I got my butt whopped growing up and was better for it. In the case of Peterson, the belt should've sufficed. Thus another cap in the otherwise horrifying week in the NFL. |
