If Ken Griffey Jr. couldn’t get in to the Hall unanimously then Derek Jeter wasn’t going to either. And yes I know Mariano Rivera got in with zero push back. But he was special. Undeniable. In fact there may have been a riot if Rivera didn’t get into the hall unanimously. Shit I’m not even a New York Yankees fan (I prefer the other New York baseball team). But even I can fess up that he was the greatest closer in the history of the game. There’s no conversation to be had nor needed. So to be completely honest I’m not surprised not one iota that Derek Jeter missed the unanimous tag by just one vote. But we all know why that happened. These archaic baseball writers are out of touch. Some do it for clout chasing purposes. Others are holier than thou, self righteous assholes. Derek Jeter helped make the New York Yankees matter again at a time when they didn’t for a good 15 years before winning the first of 5 World Series title in 1996. Hard to believe in 2020 but it’s true. I can say this with full confidence. Especially given that I have many friends who work currently or have worked in the media. Many want to be felt just as important as the athlete or team that they cover. It’s a “me-me-me” world and today’s journalists are squarely in the middle of it. That said, in the grander scheme we should all just be happy Jeter got in to the Hall on the first ballot. Imagine if he didn’t? There would be a riot. |
