Let me start this first by saying that in my personal opinion I do not share Derrick Rose‘s sentiments on himself in whether he’s the best player in the NBA.
Ok now that’s out the way. I see nothing wrong with his comments. Sure there has been somewhat of an outcry concerning his bravado but let’s keep it real, what was he supposed to say? First off it wasn’t just some off the cuff comment to attract attention. He was actually in the middle of a sit down interview and the interviewer basically felt the need to present this question to him. What’s Derrick Rose supposed to say? That he sucks? I personally do not understand the backlash. In my opinion one major reason this is such a relatively big story is the timing of it all. We are in the middle of the leanest time of year in sports and media types are searching for story lines and subjects to carry them over till the start of the NFL season. No disrespect to Major League Baseball. The running narrative on D-Rose haven’t been the most positive specifically in the last 3 months with his decision to not return to the Chicago Bulls before their playoff run even though he was cleared by doctors to play after tearing his ACL in April 2012. Many questioned his heart whether he can hack it altogether. So comments like these show signs of a player who’s still not lacking for confidence in himself and his standing in today’s NBA even if it’s factual or not. The Chicago Bulls are expected to be a major contender in the Eastern Conference and are on the shortlist of teams expected to challenge the Back To Back Champions Miami Heat. In a league that is predicated heavily on sexy storylines, Rose’s comments are just another gift that keeps on giving for the 2013-14 season. These comments should be encouraging to hear for the Bulls fanbase. Now let’s see if Derrick can walk the walk. |
